One of the most beautiful villages in the Blue Mountains  of New South Wales is Wentworth Falls.  It’s hard for a proud  Blackheathen to admit this…but  it’s true.  My favourite destination is Conservation Hut, originally built as a resting place for bush walkers, and a meeting room for  members of the local Conservation Society.

It has changed a great deal since those early days, expanding into a spacious cafe, with a terrace overlooking the Jamison Valley. My partner and I often take overseas visitors here for lunch.

Inside,  bricks from the original hut have been incorporated into a huge  fireplace,  providing  warmth and cheer in winter.   Great food helps too. One of my  favourites for a  light meal  is Salmon Hash, topped with a fried egg.

WINTER WARMTH

As many patrons are walkers it’s a challenge for Kerry Mulford, owner of the café at times like this, when bush fires can force the closing of lookouts and tracks.

Kerry has just completed a make-over of the menu, but promises me that old favourites such as the Salmon Hash remain. There is also live music on the first, second and third Sundays of the month.
