WANTON – Collins Dictionary definition……..Sexually loose or unrestrained. I’m afraid this label must now be attached to the. resident Wonga couple in my Blackheath garden.
Here is mother Wonga with her very new chicks. They were brought down from the nest about ten days ago.
But now, with the twins still completely dependent on their parents, Mr and Mrs Wonga are spending half the day sitting back on the old nest, calling to each other! Oh good grief. They have been in breeding overdrive all year, but this is ridiculous. A single chick called June, hatched in well…..June of course. Then came a failed attempt with infertile eggs, and finally the twins hatched in August. The text books tell me that Wongas breed from October until March, well this pair obviously haven’t read that info.
I have a feeling the couple will soon graduate from canoodling on the nest to getting up to something more serious on their regular wooing bench.
Meanwhile the twins are happily pottering about in their ‘ivy league’, well ivy leaf, ground nursery. They are being fed pigeon milk regularly, so that’s a relief. Are they even aware that their parents are looking to produce siblings with such indecent haste?
I’m able to observe the wooing bench from the comfort of my bed. Hang on, what’s my associate Editor Des doing camped out there?
Wow, it seems he is taking matters into his own….paws. I’m not sure one should interfere with Mother Nature Des, but I haven’t the heart to make you cease and desist.
Des has become very attached to the little Wongas. Like me, he fears those wanton parents will become so distracted that they end up forgetting all about their offspring. This would be disastrous, as the chicks will need to be fed several times a day for a few more weeks. I may have to contact THE WELFARE! That is if Editor Des doesn’t beat me to it.
Trying to be kind to my dear Wongas, my theory is that they consider the world to be in such a mess that they are trying ensure the continuation of their species.
