Thai Silk, in the Blue Mountains village of Blackheath, is our closest restaurant. It’s housed in what was once a private residence, at 124 Wentworth Street. My partner Rob and I live just a few minutes walk away.
OK, so a bit of a negative first. It is not the most prepossessing place from the outside. I know it’s the food that counts, but the property could do with a bit of sprucing up.
Oddly enough we used to receive phone calls almost daily wanting to reserve a table or order takeaway from Thai Silk. People were bemused when we said they had the wrong number. The thing was that our old landline phone was only one digit different to the restaurant’s and Tripadvisor had published our number by mistake. When I finally discovered this I walked up to let them know. In 23 years that’s the only time I had been inside. It was the outside appearance that always made me hesitate.
Over the Christmas holidays our Canberra friend Andy took us there for lunch. It was timely, as we had been recommending it to guests in our newly opened holiday apartment. A bit risky considering we hadn’t tried it, but friends had told us it was good, and reasonably priced.
Despite the clear mention on the sign, we hadn’t realized that Thai Silk is BYO. It wasn’t a problem though, as after we ordered the boys popped around the corner for a bottle of wine.
Meanwhile the starters arrived. We had decided on two servings of the mixed entree; spring roll, curry puff, fish cake and satay chicken. All very tasty. I may be harsh, but perhaps a china rather than a plastic container for the sauce would be better visually and environmentally.
Onto the mains. For Andy it was Pad Thai, which he ordered with chicken. It looked really good, and he said it lived up to expectations.
I’m not sure why Rob ordered crispy fried pork belly when he even trims the fat off prosciutto and filet steak, but he assured me he enjoyed it. The dish was served with basil and chilli in oyster sauce.
As for me, well I can never go past seafood, so I chose King Prawns, with vermicelli noodles, ginger, shallots, onion and green vegetables. The prawns were perfectly cooked and I just loved the translucent vermicelli, which I’d never had before. A perfect dish. By the way, the bowl in the background contains Jasmine rice, steamed in coconut milk. It was a side dish we shared and really enjoyed.
NOTE – While we were there people were popping in to reserve tables for dinner, but it was fully booked. Blackheath is a popular tourist spot and bookings at any of our eateries is a good idea, especially at weekends and during holiday breaks.
Will I continue to recommend the restaurant to our studio guests? Definitely, and we will be back ourselves. Thanks for taking us Andy.
