Hello. Did you know that Australia’s dear little koala had a very bad time during the bush fires earlier this year? Well they can’t run very fast, so that was a problem. I was in Sydney the other day and people were protesting about it all. I didn’t fully understand who they were and what their message was, but well there’s climate change and loss of habitat (that means their homes) isn’t there?

A group of the protesters were lying down in the Pitt Street Mall dressed in koala suits. I thought I looked more like one to be honest, I mean at least I’m a bear with a fur coat. I would have joined them, but my employer Pauline Conolly said I would get my jumper dirty. A small price to pay for such an important issue if you ask me, but sadly she is the boss. I told the organizers that I would publicize the koala cause instead.

Meanwhile, someone standing near me said there was another disturbing koala sight up at the State Library in Macquarie Street. Off I went to investigate.

Oh my word ‘disturbing’ was an understatement. That’s not one of those environmentally sustainable cardboard coffins the little fellow is in is it? Crikey, and look….he’s as flat as a tack.

I live at a property called The Gums in the Blue Mountains, so I was tempted to take him home for a square meal.
To be honest, the koala is not common up here at the best of times, so we can’t afford to lose any. Here is a lovely person releasing one back into the wild after the fires. We really need to stop chopping their trees down don’t we?

I finished my research on the train ride home to Blackheath. Then there was a late night for me typing up the story. And hey presto…..here it is! I hope you find it thought provoking.

Good luck my furry cousins. I must be related to you somehow, even though Pauline tells me I was born in China.

Well done Des, very grownup and caring views from one so young.
He says thank you Annabelle. I was quite proud of him.
