The Victory Cafe, venue for a thank you to firefighters.

You do have to admire the residents of Blackheath. A few weeks ago hundreds turned out on a near 40 degree day to thank firefighters and all the support organizations after the bushfires.

How ironic that since then we have suffered a great deal of damage from wind and torrential rain. Last night it was absolutely tipping down as a more personal ‘thank you’ event was held. Terry Tan, delightful owner of the Victory Café, very nearly lost his home in the fires. Terry wanted to express his gratitude to those who worked so hard to protect his property, and put on a free dinner at the Café; everyone welcome.

Despite the weather, once again a huge crowd responded, spilling out onto the footpath. Just as well Aussie buildings have decent awnings!

Terry, David and their staff produced some great curries, appreciated by everyone on a much cooler night than we have been experiencing.

It was an enjoyable evening of catching up with friends, listening to music by The Keepers and, like Terry, feeling grateful for all our emergency services personnel. I’m pretty sure there will be a large amount of money in the donation boxes, which will go to help fund the firefighters.

Everyone believes their own community is special, and we certainly do. Thanks Terry, and long live the unquenchable spirit of Blackheath!
